Mathijs says:

In my village “Nootdorp” live many not-too-shy mallards. This gave me the idea to make close-up images of duck feathers. After a photo session, where I was able to take quite a few images of the feathers of some ducks, I noticed that the feathers on the side of a duck looked a bit like a landscape with sand dunes. Then I thought it might be a good idea to take a picture where you saw the side of a duck that looked just like a landscape in which you also could see ducks flying. After observing the ducks for a while, I noticed that they often had the same flight path to land in the pond. By first taking a picture of the side of a duck and then waiting in the right place for some ducks to fly toward me, I was able to create a second picture of ducks flying over the first picture using multiple exposures.

Mathijs Frenken

the Netherlands

Mathijs has been very interested in animals since childhood. For him, birds are special because of their interesting behavior, beautifully colored feathers, and of course their ability to fly. About 10 years ago he decided to start photographing birds. Soon after that, he started to photograph all other nature and wildlife in addition to birds. Nowadays he spends much of his spare time taking pictures and occasionally he gives photography workshops. Experimenting with creative techniques gives him the feeling of freedom and this is how Mathijs creates photos that invite you to look longer.
