Mario Suárez says:

Foggy days are always a perfect excuse to head to the mountains, and when they arrive during autumn, it’s almost a must. The combination of autumn colors from the beech leaves, the lichens, and the mist is simply breathtaking. I overexposed by three stops to achieve a painterly effect.

This photo was taken in the Picos de Europa National Park in northern Spain. The Picos de Europa (‘Peaks of Europe’) are a mountain range located 20 km inland from Spain’s northern coast, spanning the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León. A widely accepted theory is that these peaks were the first sight of Europe for ships arriving from the Americas.

Mario Suárez

Spain

Born in 1968 in Asturias, Spain, where he lives and works as a primary school teacher, inspiring his students to develop a love for nature.

He was introduced to photography at the age of thirteen when his father gave him his first reflex camera. With the arrival of digital photography, he began focusing on his passion for bird photography, aiming to capture an artistic vision of these creatures. Living near the Cantabrian coast, he’s in an ideal location to photograph seabirds and their migrations. Over the past twenty years, he has devoted countless hours to photographing these traveling birds, becoming highly specialized in this field.

His work has been featured in nature magazines, newspapers, and various national and international publications. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions and given lectures on bird photography. He has received awards in many of the world’s top nature photography competitions and has served as a judge in several international competitions. However, his proudest achievement is being a founding member of AFONAS, the Asturian Society of Nature Photographers, where he currently serves as president.
