The Netherlands has a very long coastline with many beaches. The wide beach and the pier of IJmuiden extend a lot further into the sea than the rest of the west coast. It is therefore one of the best locations for photographing birds. Especially during the bird migration, all kinds of seabirds come here to rest or to forage. Due to the light conditions, this beach is extremely suitable for taking high-key images. During the bird migration, I can often be found on this beach. Also on a cloudy day in September.
At first there were hardly any birds on the beach, but towards noon a group of sanderlings came to rest. I love high-key photography and due to the light conditions at that moment I was able to take this high-key image.
I used multiple exposure and I overexposured in order to create a high key image.

Ever since he was a child, Mathijs has been passionate about everything that has to do with animals and nature. By combining his passion for animals and nature with another passion of Mathijs, technology, a new passion arose about 10 years ago: nature photography. Since then, he has been photographing everything that has to do with nature, from landscapes to abstract and from insects and mushrooms to mammals.
He has always found birds fascinating and prefers to photograph them. By experimenting with creative techniques, Mathijs creates images that invite you to look at them for a longer period of time. With his photos, he wants to show people how beautiful nature is and how important it is to preserve nature.
