Irina Petrova Adamatzky says:

In this photograph, I have captured the intricate skin of a Corn Snakelet (Pantherophis guttatus) in a unique manner, using ultraviolet light. It’s a well-established scientific fact that snakeskin exhibits a mesmerizing glow under ultraviolet light, a phenomenon that herpetologists have been harnessing since the late 20th century for nocturnal snake tracking. I harnessed this fascinating ability to capture this shot, which showcases the snake’s skin with its captivating patterns and textures brilliantly illuminated by ultraviolet light. The vivid colors and intricate markings take on an almost otherworldly appearance, providing a truly captivating and ethereal visual experience. This distinctive attribute of snakeskin not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also serves as an invaluable scientific tool for the study and tracking of these elusive creatures. Through my lens, we gain a unique glimpse into the remarkable adaptations of snakes, as their skin reacts to the ultraviolet spectrum. This photograph marries the realms of scientific discovery and visual artistry, inviting us to marvel at the beauty and functionality inherent in the natural world. It’s worth noting that I obtained this snakelet’s skin from an American friend after a snake molted. I brought it to my home in Somerset, UK, where I captured this shot in a darkened room, harnessing the power of ultraviolet light to reveal the skin’s astonishing qualities.
