Christophe Vasselinsays:

The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) is for me the most elusive and iconic arctic animal. This wolf lives exclusively in the Canadian High Arctic.  Meeting it requires a lot of organization, logistics, physical engagement, patience, luck, and a competent Inuit team. We were on Ellesmere Island, the northernmost point of land in Canada and one of the most northern points of land on the planet, looking for wildlife for 10 days when we met this wolf. We had set up our base camp near an iceberg trapped in the ice floe. In the morning, one of our guides told us that they had spotted a wolf eating a baby seal. Happily, the wolf decided to eat the prey very close to our camp, and without disturbing him during his meal, we observed it for 2 hours. Then, he decided to leave and passed just in front of the incredible blue iceberg. A perfect shot and an unforgettable moment.

His passion for wildlife photography was born in 2003 after a trip to Tanzania. He developed a deep affinity for this continent and its vast natural landscapes in Africa. He dedicated time to honing his photography skills and expanding his knowledge of wildlife during several journeys to various African countries, including Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia, all renowned for their incredibly diverse fauna.

In 2010, he embarked on his first expedition to the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by visits to Rwanda in 2012 and 2013 to encounter our distant relatives, the gorillas. Exploring this area was an emotionally enriching experience that ignited a profound passion for this species, which shares certain similarities with us.

Starting in 2012, he began to explore northern territories, including Spitsbergen, Alaska, and Norway. Since then, the Arctic regions have become his favored playground, with polar bears, brown bears, and musk oxen proving to be captivating and highly photogenic subjects. Throughout his numerous journeys, he has gained a heightened awareness of our planet’s vulnerability. Consequently, he approaches his beloved passion, photography, with the utmost respect for the environment
