Manuel says:

I took this photograph on the Great Saltee Island (Ireland) during a three-day trip in 2018. I spent a long time observing the behavior of a gannet (Morus bassanus) colony. An immense rock, completely white by the guano of the gannets, helped me to blur the lower part of the image while photographing an individual that was somewhat far from my position. Suddenly I saw through the viewfinder of the camera something white out of focus, another alcatraz was placed a few meters from me, I modified the composition to include it in the shot while my heart was beating fast because I did not want to miss the opportunity to immortalize the image I had in mind.

I have tried to play with the concepts big/small and focused/unfocused to confuse the viewer about the location of the birds. The sky was cloudy, this helped me get a white background which contributed to a cleaner and more minimalist composition.

About Manuel:

Spain

I began taking nature pictures 7 years ago, before that I just took pictures when I was traveling, without any ambitions. In the last 7 years photography took all my spare time as a hobby. At the beginning I started with landscapes and patterns, but quickly I fell in love with wild animals and birds. I improved my photography with every new thing I discovered. Especially in hiding techniques and birds behavior. Today, a big part of my photography is about birds, but I prefer a more creative approximation, showing their relationship with environment and looking for diffuse pictures and non-traditional images, where pixel peeping or definition are not important. About 95 percent of my work as a photographer is done near the place where I live, and I consider this essential to grow as a photographer. In fact, in the last two years I have travelled for the first time in a nature photography trip out of Spain, my homeland. I consider myself versatile and I am more and more interested in every category of Nature Photography: birds, mammals, invertebrates, macro, flowers, landscape, patterns, etc, trying to do something creative in every category, where composition is more important to me that the subject itself.

In the last 5 years, I was honored with several awards in nature photography contests, as Montphoto, Memorial María Luisa, Oasis Photocontest, Narava, Cadiz Photonature, Montier en Der, Festival de l’oiseau, Glanzlichter (Over All Winner 2018), Golden Turtle (Over All Winner 2018), Sony World Photography Awards (National Winner Spain 2019), Festival de la Camargue (Over All Winner 2019), GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Bird Photographer of the Year, etc.
