I took this photo at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Hampton Bays, NY, while the veterinarians clean the swans’ cage. This photo was taken in February when I was a student in the International Center of Photography program in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism. It’s one of my projects “In a house of harmony: New York Wildlife Rescue Centers” which makes me go there every weekend since November. This place is so unreal!
When I stepped through the entrance, I saw a lot of injured animals; some are sleeping, some are walking around like a kid, some are looking at me. It seems like a children hospital. As I’ve been there for a couple of months, I know the veterinarian’s routine. In the morning, they will prepare the food and clean the injured animals’ cage, take care, and feed them until the sunset. That day I saw the veterinarian gently put the swan into the bathtub one by one to clean its cage. The swans were curiously looking at me (maybe they wonder who I am). I wait until they start to ignore me and turn their head in the same way and then I pressed the shutter.
