Pam Dorner says:

I took my youngest dog Blue on a hike in the bosque near my home in Rio Rancho, before an early October snowstorm. Rio Rancho is located near Albuquerque, New Mexico in the United States. The bosque is a Cottonwood forest area that runs along the Rio Grande river. The snow started to get heavier and the visibility tougher, so I decided to head back home. On the way, Blue (a labrador retriever mix) got very excited and started pulling on his leash. I knew a coyote (Canis latrans) must be near but looked around and didn’t see any movement. We kept going with my overly excited lab on heightened alert. We came over a hill when Blue nearly pulled me off the trail. I got a firm hold of his leash and looked around to see this beautiful song dog sitting in the snow behind us. Coyotes are also known as song dogs due to their wide variety of yips, growls, whines and howls. This coyote was very quiet and calm and if it wasn’t for understanding my dog’s behavior, I may have missed this photo opportunity entirely.  I quickly got my camera out and fired off a few photos before the coyote happily headed on his/her way.

I am an award-winning wildlife/landscape photographer from New Mexico with a marketing degree from Texas Tech University. My work comprises a love of wildlife such as the coastal brown bears of Alaska, the birds of Bosque del Apache, as well as the allure of the Southwest landscape. One of my favorite subjects is the Sandia Mountains along with the Rio Grande river/Bosque and the wildlife that call the area home. My goal in photography is to establish a connection with the land, the wildlife that inhabit its vast space, and the viewer. “That personal connection with nature is what fills my soul, and I hope through sharing that love, that others will feel the same wonder and reverence of the natural world and desire to protect it.”
