Miquel Angel Artús Illana says:
A group of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) head out to sea in the early morning, just as the sun rises over the horizon. They will spend the whole day fishing and eating in the sea. When they return they will have to feed their hungry young, that will wait for them on the beach.
The image was taken in The Nec – Saunders Islands – Islas Malvinas, where for five days I was isolated with a small group of photographers, only with the company of penguins and oysters, species of birds and mammals.
Since the best light was at sunrise, I stood on a small hill at five in the morning and waited for the penguins to appear in groups as they usually do. The light and the surroundings did the rest.
About Miquel Angel Artús Illana:
Spain
I was born in Barcelona in 1958. I started in the world of photography very young. When I was 17, I studied analog photography for three years at an academy in Barcelona. Since my passion for nature had already awakened, photography was the way to preserve what I had seen on my weekend trips to the mountains.
Life took me to Tossa de Mar, a beautiful town on the Costa Brava de Catalunya where I have lived for more than 40 years. For a very long period of time, my professional and family projects took me away from nature photography, although not from photography.
In 2010 I resumed this great hobby by starting a project in the town of Tossa de Mar that allowed me to obtain various and very renowned awards. That was the beginning of a short but intense trajectory in the years that followed until today.
Together with my wife (also an amateur in photography) I try to travel as far as possible, to places that are far away for me. Especially cold places where Nature in all its spheres is the protagonist. This has allowed me to know such incredible places as: many corners of Canada, Alaska, Yellowstone and other parks in the US, Northern Norway, Iceland, Svalvard, Falkland Islands, Puna de Atacama, Hokkaido, Poland, etc. And photograph many and varied species of animals, as well as incredible landscapes.
For more than four years I have combined my usual work (the one that provides me with income) with that of professional photography.
