Ronald Zimmerman says:

During the autumn migration, many common buzzards (Buteo buteo) can be seen soaring on thermals. In autumn local common buzzards stay in the country. Common buzzards from Norway and Sweden migrate to the south and south-west of Europe, and also to the Netherlands.

Wildlife that allows me to have many photo opportunities are ideal subjects for a creative approach. In 2019 I wanted to move in a different direction. I wanted to add more creativity and more storytelling to my photography. For inspiration, I started reading books about wildlife photography. During the global pandemic, I spent a lot of time experimenting in Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. This national park is my local “laboratory” in the Netherlands to experiment.

In-camera multiple exposure was one of the new techniques I wanted to experiment with. This started with playing and evolved into fresh ideas. In order to create this photo I had to photograph the buzzard, followed by a second, long exposure, of the surrounding autumn-coloured trees. This different kind of common buzzard image is the result of a yearlong process.

About Ronald Zimmerman:

About Ronald Zimmerman:

the Netherlands

Ronald Zimmerman was born in 1985 and is passionate about nature. Ronald’s profession is ecological consultant. An ecological consultant undertakes research and surveys to provide advice on ecological matters and nature legislation. This is very much needed, because nature is often being overlooked.

Ronald is a wildlife photographer in his spare time. For him, wildlife photography is the best way to have some exercise, to be in the most beautiful surroundings and forget about everything else. A great way to keep the mind in good health.

Ronald also uses wildlife photography as an educational tool and hopes to raise appreciation for the natural world. To him every small bit of appreciation feels like a great reward.

Tropical amphibians and reptiles are Ronald’s favourite subjects. This passion has brought him to the rainforests of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Madagascar, Borneo (Malaysia), Sri Lanka and Surinam.

His local national park is his “laboratory” to experiment and try new ideas in the field. In this “laboratory” he also photographs birds, mammals and arthropods. Over the past two years he has spent a lot of time in his local national park. It has helped him to evolve his photography. Even though he made the best of it, he still hopes to visit the tropical rainforest soon.
