Andrey Savin says:

The photo was taken during a night dive almost near my house – this place is called Malatapay (Negros Island, Philippines). I was on my way back when I spotted a pair of Shy Crabs during mating season. The depth is only 3 meters but the tank was almost empty and I had to save air. A pair of crabs formed an almost perfect circle with their bodies and my idea was to use optical snoot to highlight them without getting light on the bright sand, which in turn is backlit from behind. The crabs were not very willing to pose and were moving fast, but I still managed to capture the shot just as they started to burrow into the sand. I often shoot these funny crabs because their body shape and face are very expressive. That day I took my best shot.

About Andrey Savin:

Russia/Philippines

My name is Andrey Savin, I am from Russia, but in 2018 I moved to the Philippines to express myself in underwater photography and video. I live with my family on Negros Island, just opposite the famous Apo Island, and dive solo almost every day. I have a constant assistant – one local guy whom I taught diving. My daughter is 6 years old, also knows how to dive, and is probably the youngest diver on the planet. I shoot with two underwater cameras A7R IV and GH5 with a Ninja V monitor, as well as a wide range of lenses and underwater light. I’m a techie by nature – in 1993 I graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University in Moscow, Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics. I have an analytical type of thinking, I like to understand technical details, try new types of techniques and achieve goals. My Instagram is one of the most popular among underwater photographers. Over the past couple of years, I have participated and have been the winner / prize winner of several photo contests. In the future, I would like to link my activities with a number of leading brands – manufacturers of professional equipment for underwater photography and participate in projects related to underwater photography and video shooting, as well as creating content for social networks.
